Etymology
Pyrrharctia combines Greek pyrrhos (flame-coloured) with arctia (bear moth). It becomes the Isabella tiger moth.
History
American folklore claims the width of its rusty band predicts the coming winter; a 1940s study by Dr. C. H. Curran popularised the idea, though the band actually reflects age and moisture.
Name and naming
The woolly bear, also spelled woollybear, is the common name for the caterpillar of the Isabella tiger moth, Pyrrharctia isabella, a name that has been used in North American folk speech since at least the nineteenth century for its dense, bristly, fur-like coat. The species name isabella is thought to reference a fawn or pale-yellow colour historically associated with the name, matching the caterpillar's banded orange-brown and black colouring. The moth itself, in its adult form, is a modestly coloured yellowish-orange insect that attracts far less attention than its famous larva.
Several other tiger moth caterpillars in North America are also loosely called woolly bears or woolly worms, including the black and yellow banded species found in different regions, but Pyrrharctia isabella is the classic woolly bear of folklore and the one most associated with winter-weather prediction traditions.
Where it lives
Woolly bears are found across most of the United States and southern Canada, in habitats ranging from meadows and prairies to suburban gardens, roadsides and forest edges, wherever their broad range of host plants grows. Because they are generalist feeders and cold-tolerant, they occur as far north as the Arctic Circle in some tiger moth relatives, though Pyrrharctia isabella itself is concentrated in temperate North America. Their conspicuous autumn wandering behaviour, when caterpillars leave feeding sites to search for winter shelter, makes them one of the most commonly seen caterpillars on sidewalks, driveways and roads in October across the northern and central United States.
They overwinter as caterpillars rather than as eggs or pupae, tucking themselves under bark, leaf litter, logs or stones, which means the same individual caterpillar experiences the habitat across two very different seasons, feeding sites in autumn and shelter sites through winter.
Anatomy and senses
A mature woolly bear caterpillar measures about 4.5 centimetres and is covered in dense setae, or bristle-like hairs, arranged in a pattern with a wide reddish-brown or rust-coloured central band flanked by black bands at both ends, though the exact proportion of black to brown varies by individual, instar and even local weather history. The setae are not venomous or urticating like those of some other caterpillar families, and the woolly bear can generally be handled safely, though sensitive skin may react mildly to the bristle tips. Its head bears simple eyespots, stemmata, that detect light and shadow, and short antennae used for chemical and tactile sensing as it moves.
Like other caterpillars it has three pairs of true legs on the thorax and five pairs of prolegs on the abdomen, and it moves with a characteristic looping, bristling gait as it forages across open ground during its autumn wandering phase.
Host plants and feeding
Woolly bears are dietary generalists that feed on a very wide range of low-growing plants, including plantain, dandelion, clover, grasses, nettle and various weeds, making them one of the least host-specific caterpillars in North America. This dietary flexibility allows them to thrive in disturbed and human-altered habitats such as lawns, gardens and roadside verges where more specialised caterpillars cannot survive. Feeding is most intense in late summer and early autumn as the caterpillar builds up fat reserves that will sustain it through winter dormancy without further food intake.
In spring, after overwintering, the caterpillar resumes brief feeding before pupating, giving the species two active feeding windows in most of its range separated by a long winter diapause as a partially grown larva.
Defences
The woolly bear's dense hair coat provides modest physical protection against small predators and parasitoid wasps by making it harder to grip and pierce the cuticle, though the hairs themselves are not chemically defensive in the way that saddleback or puss caterpillar spines are. When disturbed, the caterpillar curls tightly into a bristly ring, tucking its head inward, a behaviour that both protects vulnerable body segments and, according to persistent folk belief, prompted its use in weather forecasting.
Its most remarkable physiological defence, however, is biochemical rather than behavioural: the woolly bear produces cryoprotectant compounds, including glycerol, that allow its tissues to survive being frozen solid through winter, with its heart stopping and later restarting in spring, an adaptation shared with several other cold-climate insects.
Metamorphosis and life cycle
A female Isabella tiger moth lays clusters of eggs in late spring or summer, and the hatched caterpillars feed through several instars before autumn temperatures trigger the well-known overwintering wander in search of shelter under bark or leaf litter. Once settled, the caterpillar's body produces glycerol and other cryoprotectants, allowing it to freeze and thaw repeatedly through the cold months without cellular damage, a survival strategy that lets Pyrrharctia isabella range farther north than most other tiger moths.
In spring the caterpillar thaws, resumes brief feeding, then spins a papery cocoon incorporating its own body hairs and pupates, emerging two to four weeks later as an adult moth. In warmer parts of its range the species can complete two generations per year, while in colder regions it manages only one, spending most of its life as an overwintering larva.
People, folklore and history
The woolly bear is central to one of North America's most enduring pieces of weather folklore, the belief that the width of its black bands relative to the central brown band predicts the severity of the coming winter, a wider brown band supposedly forecasting a milder season. This tradition was popularised in the 1940s and 1950s by American Museum of Natural History entomologist Charles Howard Curran, who conducted informal, non-rigorous observational counts in New York's Bear Mountain State Park and shared the results with the press, sparking widespread public fascination. Scientific study has since shown the band width actually reflects the caterpillar's age, instar and local moisture and temperature history rather than any predictive relationship to future weather.
Despite the debunking, the woolly bear's forecasting legend persists in annual festivals, most famously the Woollybear Festival held each autumn in Vermilion, Ohio, which draws tens of thousands of visitors for caterpillar races and band-counting contests.
Conservation and the future
Pyrrharctia isabella is not considered threatened and remains common and widespread across its North American range, benefiting from its generalist diet and tolerance of disturbed habitats where more specialised species decline. Its abundance makes it a useful, low-stakes ambassador species for public engagement with entomology, since it can be handled safely, observed easily and reared with minimal equipment, and its folklore hook draws attention that more obscure insects rarely receive.
Because it is a habitat generalist rather than a specialist tied to a single declining plant community, the woolly bear is less vulnerable to the meadow and prairie losses threatening many other caterpillar species, though broad-scale pesticide use and the loss of leaf litter through excessive lawn tidiness can still reduce local populations by removing overwintering shelter.
