Etymology

History
Described by Linnaeus in 1758 from a Carolina specimen, the luna moth is one of the largest moths in North America and one of the first American insects illustrated in Europe.
Name and naming
The luna moth caterpillar is the larval stage of Actias luna, named for the Roman moon goddess Luna in reference to the adult moth's pale, moon-like hindwing eyespots and its exclusively nocturnal habits. The genus Actias belongs to the family Saturniidae, the giant silk moths, a group named for the large, silk-producing cocoons many of its members spin. Actias luna was formally described in the eighteenth century and remains one of the most recognisable native moths in North America, chiefly because of the adult's pale green wings and long trailing tails rather than the caterpillar, which is far less commonly noticed.
The caterpillar has no distinct common name of its own and is simply referred to as the luna moth caterpillar or luna caterpillar in field guides and popular writing.
Where it lives
Luna moth caterpillars are found throughout the eastern half of North America, from Nova Scotia and the Canadian Maritimes south to Florida and west to the edge of the Great Plains, in deciduous forests, woodland edges and wooded suburban areas that contain their host trees. They are almost never encountered by chance because they feed high in the tree canopy and blend so effectively with foliage, and most sightings come from people who specifically search host trees at night or rear caterpillars from eggs collected from a captive female moth. The species is absent from most of western North America, where its close relatives fill similar ecological niches in different forest types.
Within its range, the caterpillar's distribution tracks the distribution of its preferred deciduous hardwood hosts rather than any particular soil or climate feature beyond the general requirement of a temperate forest growing season.
Anatomy and senses
A mature luna caterpillar can reach roughly 6 to 9 centimetres, among the largest native caterpillars in North America, with a plump cylindrical body coloured a vivid lime or apple green that closely matches fresh hardwood leaves. Rows of small yellow spots run along the sides, and short tufts of fine setae rise from small tubercles along the body, most conspicuously a pair of reddish-orange projections near the head. The caterpillar's simple eyes, or stemmata, detect only light intensity and movement, so the insect relies far more heavily on chemoreceptors on its mouthparts, legs and antennae to identify edible leaf surfaces and avoid contaminated or unsuitable foliage.
Its prolegs and thoracic legs give it a powerful grip on smooth bark and leaf petioles, an important adaptation given that it spends its entire larval life well above the ground, often many metres up in the canopy.
Host plants and feeding
Luna caterpillars feed on the leaves of a range of deciduous hardwood trees, most commonly white birch, hickory, walnut, sweetgum and persimmon, with regional preferences varying across its broad range. A caterpillar typically stays on the same tree, or even the same branch, throughout its development, moving only as far as necessary to reach fresh, undamaged leaves, and it passes through five instars before reaching full size. Because the species is univoltine to trivoltine depending on latitude, meaning it produces one to three generations per year, feeding periods and peak caterpillar abundance vary considerably between northern and southern populations.
Unlike many smaller moth caterpillars, the luna caterpillar consumes an enormous volume of leaf tissue relative to its size in order to fuel a very large, non-feeding adult moth, since adult luna moths lack functional mouthparts entirely and live off fat reserves accumulated during the larval stage.
Defences
The caterpillar's green colouring and leaf-mimicking posture provide its primary defence, allowing it to remain nearly invisible against foliage to visually hunting birds. When disturbed, a luna caterpillar can rear back and click its mandibles audibly, a startle display, and some individuals also regurgitate a distasteful fluid as a deterrent to a probing predator. Its short body setae are not stinging or urticating in the way that puss or saddleback caterpillar spines are, so the species relies almost entirely on camouflage, posture and startle behaviour rather than chemical weaponry.
Parasitoid wasps and flies, particularly the introduced tachinid fly Compsilura concinnata brought to North America in the early twentieth century for biological pest control, represent one of the most significant threats to luna caterpillars, since the fly's larvae consume the caterpillar from within regardless of its camouflage.
Metamorphosis and life cycle
After roughly five to six weeks of feeding across five instars, a full-grown luna caterpillar spins a thin, papery silk cocoon, typically incorporating a leaf, and drops with the leaf to the forest floor, where it pupates concealed in leaf litter through part or all of winter in northern populations. Adult moths emerge in spring or summer depending on latitude and generation number, and because they lack functional mouthparts they cannot feed at all as adults, surviving on stored larval fat for a lifespan of roughly one week, during which their sole purpose is mating and egg-laying.
Females release a powerful pheromone to attract males, some of which can detect and fly toward a calling female from over a kilometre away using their large, feathery antennae, and after mating a female can lay well over a hundred eggs on host tree leaves before dying.
People, folklore and history
The luna moth has long been treated as a symbol of transformation, ephemeral beauty and nocturnal mystery in North American popular culture, appearing in jewellery, tattoos, book covers and children's literature, almost always depicted as the adult moth rather than the far less glamorous caterpillar. Nineteenth century naturalists such as those working with early Saturniidae collections prized luna moth specimens for their unusual pale green colour and long hindwing tails, and the species became a staple of amateur lepidoptery and school insect-collecting exercises throughout the twentieth century. Its short, non-feeding adult life has also made it a recurring metaphor in essays and poetry about brevity and mortality.
Because the caterpillar itself is rarely seen, most public fascination and folklore attaches to the adult moth, with the larval stage remaining comparatively obscure outside of entomological and rearing communities.
Conservation and the future
Luna moths are not currently listed as federally threatened or endangered in the United States, but regional population declines have been documented in parts of the northeastern range, attributed in part to the introduced parasitoid fly Compsilura concinnata, light pollution disrupting adult mating behaviour, and pesticide use including broad-spectrum sprays targeting gypsy moth caterpillars that also kill luna larvae. Because luna caterpillars feed high in the canopy and are rarely censused directly, most population trend data comes from indirect measures such as light-trap counts of adult moths, which have shown declines in several long-monitored eastern sites since the mid-twentieth century.
Conservation-minded gardeners and foresters increasingly avoid broad-spectrum insecticide spraying during moth flight periods and reduce unnecessary outdoor lighting near woodland edges, both measures intended to protect luna moths and other native silk moths whose populations appear sensitive to modern landscape-scale pressures.
