Etymology
Papilio is Latin for "butterfly". "Swallowtail" describes the tails on the adult's hindwings, like a swallow's forked tail.
History
Papilio was among the first insect genera Linnaeus named, and swallowtails have been collected and illustrated since the beginnings of European natural history.
Name and naming
Swallowtail caterpillar generally refers to the larvae of butterflies in the family Papilionidae, named for the distinctive tail-like extensions on the hindwings of most adult swallowtail butterflies, though the caterpillars themselves bear no tails at all. Among the most commonly referenced species in North America are the eastern black swallowtail, Papilio polyxenes, and the eastern tiger swallowtail, Papilio glaucus, each with a caterpillar showing a dramatically different appearance from its later-instar to early-instar form. The genus name Papilio is simply the Latin word for butterfly, reflecting the classical prominence of this group among early European naturalists cataloguing Lepidoptera.

In North America, black swallowtail caterpillars are especially familiar to home gardeners because their host plants include common culinary herbs such as parsley, dill and fennel, bringing the species directly into vegetable gardens. Tiger swallowtail caterpillars, by contrast, favour forest and woodland edge habitats where their preferred hardwood tree hosts grow.
Because the family is so large and globally distributed, no single habitat description applies to all swallowtail caterpillars, though most favour open to semi-open habitats with reliable access to their specific host plants.
Anatomy and senses
Swallowtail caterpillars undergo one of the most dramatic appearance changes across instars of any common caterpillar group, with early instars of many species, including the eastern black swallowtail and eastern tiger swallowtail, resembling bird droppings, a mottled black and white or brown pattern that deters predators through disguise rather than confrontation. By the final instars the caterpillar transforms into a smooth, plump, often bright green body, in the black swallowtail marked with black bands studded with yellow-orange spots, and in the tiger swallowtail bearing large, startling eyespots near the head that mimic the face of a small snake. All swallowtail caterpillars share simple stemmata for basic light detection and antennae used mainly for close-range chemical sensing of host leaves.

Host plants and feeding
Different swallowtail species specialise on different plant families, with black swallowtails feeding on members of the carrot family, Apiaceae, including wild and cultivated parsley, dill, fennel, celery and Queen Anne's lace, while eastern tiger swallowtails feed on a range of deciduous hardwood trees including tulip tree, wild cherry, birch and ash. Pipevine swallowtails, another well-studied North American species, feed exclusively on toxic pipevine plants of the genus Aristolochia and sequester the plant's aristolochic acids, becoming toxic to predators much as monarchs do with milkweed. Defences

Species such as the pipevine swallowtail add a second layer of chemical defence by sequestering toxic aristolochic acids from their host plant, making them genuinely poisonous to vertebrate predators in addition to deploying the osmeterium.
Metamorphosis and life cycle
A swallowtail egg, typically laid singly on a host leaf, hatches within about a week into a first-instar caterpillar that begins life resembling a bird dropping, and the caterpillar then progresses through five instars over roughly three to four weeks, transforming in appearance partway through this period as it approaches full size. At the end of the final instar the caterpillar stops feeding, wanders to find a suitable pupation site, and forms a chrysalis held upright by a silk girdle around its middle and a silk pad gripping the rear, a support method distinct from the hanging J-shape used by monarchs. Depending on species and latitude, the chrysalis either develops directly into an adult within two to three weeks during the growing season or enters diapause to overwinter, emerging the following spring.
Many North American swallowtails produce two to three generations per year in warmer parts of their range, with the final generation of the year typically overwintering as a diapausing chrysalis rather than as an adult or larva.

Swallowtail butterflies have been prized by naturalists, collectors and gardeners for centuries owing to their large size and striking wing patterns, and their caterpillars have become equally well known through garden encounters, since black swallowtail caterpillars feeding on parsley and dill are among the most commonly reported unidentified caterpillars in home gardening forums and cooperative extension inquiries across North America.
