Etymology

tenuis is Latin for "slender". The common name comes from the sharp spine at the tail tip.

History

Rarely seen even where common, it lives under rocks and bark in damp coastal woodland. Its Canadian populations are listed as at risk.

Name and naming

The sharp-tailed snake, Contia tenuis, gets its common name from a distinctive hardened, spine-like scale at the very tip of its tail, a feature unique enough among North American snakes to give the species its identity in both common usage and scientific description. The genus name Contia is of uncertain classical derivation used by early taxonomists, while tenuis is Latin for 'slender' or 'thin', an apt description of this small, narrow-bodied snake.

First formally described in the nineteenth century as western naturalists documented Pacific coast reptile diversity, the sharp-tailed snake was long considered a single species until genetic studies in the twenty-first century revealed a second, more southern species, the forest sharp-tailed snake, splitting what had been treated as one taxon and refining understanding of its distribution.

Where it lives

This snake occupies a narrow coastal strip from southern British Columbia through Washington and Oregon into central California, generally staying within about 160 kilometers of the Pacific coastline, with populations also found on several Gulf Islands and southern Vancouver Island. It favors open woodland, grassy hillsides, oak savanna, and forest edges with loose, well-drained soil, moss cover, and rock or log debris, avoiding both dense unbroken forest and completely open grassland.

It is one of the most habitat-restricted and rarely encountered snakes in its range, spending nearly its entire life underground or beneath surface objects such as flat rocks, bark, and moss mats, emerging onto the surface only briefly during cool, damp conditions in spring and autumn. Populations in British Columbia are considered particularly isolated and vulnerable given the limited extent of remaining suitable habitat at the northern edge of the range.

Anatomy and senses

Adults are quite small, typically only 20 to 33 centimeters long, with a slender body, smooth reddish-brown to grey-brown dorsal scales, and a checkerboard pattern of black and white or cream markings along the belly that becomes more pronounced toward the tail. The namesake sharp, spine-tipped tail scale is thought to help the snake gain traction while pushing through loose soil and leaf litter, essentially functioning as an anchor point that helps propel its slender body through tight underground spaces.

Its eyes are small and its overall sensory reliance mirrors that of other fossorial snakes, depending heavily on chemical cues via a forked tongue and vomeronasal organ, and on tactile and vibrational sensitivity, since it spends so little time in conditions where vision would be useful. It moves in a somewhat stiff, straight-line manner compared to the sinuous crawling of surface-dwelling snakes, an adaptation suited to pushing through confined soil channels.

Hunting and diet

The sharp-tailed snake has one of the most specialized diets of any North American snake, feeding almost exclusively on slugs and their eggs, along with occasional small earthworms and rarely other soft-bodied invertebrates. This narrow dietary focus ties it closely to the same moist, cover-rich forest floor habitats that support high slug densities, and it appears to actively seek out slug egg clusters buried in loose soil as a concentrated food source.

To subdue slugs, which lack the ability to flee quickly, the snake uses a technique involving specialized elongated teeth that allow it to grip and hold slippery prey against its curled body, sometimes wrapping partially around the slug in a manner distinct from the constriction used by boas or kingsnakes, more a mechanism for controlling and consuming a soft, mucus-covered prey item than for killing through pressure alone.

Defense without venom

The sharp-tailed snake is entirely nonvenomous and relies on its cryptic, secretive lifestyle as its primary defense, rarely encountering predators directly because it spends so little time exposed on the surface. When it is uncovered or threatened, it may coil tightly, sometimes pressing the sharp tail tip against a threat or against the substrate, and it can also flatten and curl its body to display the contrasting black-and-white belly pattern, a startle response similar in concept to that of the ring-necked snake though less dramatically colored.

Its small size and slow movement offer little in the way of active defense, so avoidance of exposure, remaining under cover almost constantly, functions as by far its most effective survival strategy against birds, small mammals, and other snakes that would otherwise prey on it easily.

Reproduction and life cycle

Mating is believed to occur in spring, though details of courtship remain poorly documented owing to the species' secretive habits, and females lay small clutches of typically just one to nine eggs, most often two to four, in early summer beneath rocks, logs, or in loose moist soil that retains sufficient warmth and humidity for incubation. Some evidence suggests communal egg-laying, with multiple females depositing eggs at the same favorable site, similar to patterns observed in ring-necked snakes.

Eggs hatch in late summer or early autumn after an incubation period of roughly one to two months, producing tiny hatchlings under 10 centimeters long that are fully independent and already equipped with adult hunting behavior focused on slugs. Because of how rarely individuals are observed, comprehensive data on wild longevity and age at maturity remains limited, though related small colubrids typically live at least five to eight years.

People, myth and history

The sharp-tailed snake carries little folklore given how seldom it is ever encountered by people, even those who spend considerable time outdoors within its range, and most public awareness of the species stems from herpetological surveys and conservation assessments rather than any cultural tradition. Its extreme rarity in observation has made it something of a prized find among amateur naturalists and citizen-science reptile surveyors participating in cover-board monitoring programs across the Pacific Northwest.

Scientific interest in the species has grown substantially since the 2001 description of a separate southern species, the forest sharp-tailed snake, prompted renewed genetic and distributional surveys attempting to clarify exactly where the two species' ranges meet and how each should be prioritized for conservation given their differing degrees of rarity.

Conservation and the future

In Canada, the sharp-tailed snake is listed as endangered under the Species at Risk Act, reflecting its extremely limited and fragmented distribution on southeastern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, an area under intense pressure from urban and agricultural development. In the United States it is considered a species of concern in parts of its range, particularly in Washington, where suitable open woodland and oak savanna habitat has been substantially reduced by land conversion.

Conservation strategies focus on protecting and restoring the specific combination of loose soil, rock and log cover, and moist microhabitat this snake depends on, alongside continued cover-board surveys to better map its true distribution, since much of what is known about its range comes from relatively few documented sightings. Because slugs, its primary prey, thrive in undisturbed leaf litter and moist soil, broader efforts to conserve healthy forest-floor ecosystems along the Pacific coast directly support the sharp-tailed snake's long-term survival.
