It shows a strong preference for moist microhabitats within otherwise varied terrain, favoring areas with loose soil, rotting logs, leaf litter, and rock cover that provide both insulation and access to burrowing prey.
Unusually among snakes, it tolerates cooler temperatures better than almost any other North American species, remaining active at body temperatures as low as 10 to 15 degrees Celsius and being regularly found at elevations above 2,700 meters in the Sierra Nevada and Cascades, conditions that would leave most other snakes dangerously sluggish or inactive.
Anatomy and senses
Adults typically reach 35 to 70 centimeters, with a thick, cylindrical, almost sausage-shaped body, small eyes, and a blunt tail that closely resembles the head in shape and size, a resemblance enhanced by the boa's habit of hiding its true head beneath its coils and raising the blunt tail to confuse predators about which end can bite. As a boid, it retains vestigial pelvic spurs near the vent, small claw-like remnants of ancestral hind limbs used during courtship, a feature shared with pythons and other boas but absent in colubrid snakes. It has relatively poor eyesight and relies primarily on chemical cues from its tongue and Jacobson's organ, along with sensitivity to ground vibration, to detect prey in the dark, tight spaces it frequents.
Hunting and diet
The northern rubber boa specializes heavily in hunting nestling mammals, particularly young mice, voles, and shrews still confined to their nest, which it locates by following scent trails into burrows and using its blunt tail to pin and distract adult rodents defending the nest while it constricts and consumes the helpless young.
