Etymology
Eunectes is Greek for "good swimmer"; murinus means "of mice". "Anaconda" may come from Tamil anaikkonda, "elephant killer", applied by Europeans in Sri Lanka and later transplanted to South America.
History
European accounts wildly exaggerated its size for centuries, prompting Theodore Roosevelt-era prizes for a verified 30-foot specimen that were never claimed.
Name and naming
The green anaconda, Eunectes murinus, was described by Linnaeus in 1758 under the genus name that combines Greek roots meaning good or well swimmer, an apt description for the most aquatic of the world's giant constrictors. The common name anaconda likely derives from a Sri Lankan or South Indian word originally applied to a python and later misapplied by European naturalists to the South American genus Eunectes, a linguistic accident that has stuck ever since.
Four species are currently recognized in the genus, with the green anaconda the largest and most widespread, found through much of tropical South America east of the Andes, distinguished from the yellow anaconda, Eunectes notaeus, by size, coloration, and habitat preference.
Where it lives
Eunectes murinus inhabits slow-moving rivers, swamps, marshes, and flooded forest across the Amazon and Orinoco basins, including Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, French Guiana, and Trinidad. It strongly favors quiet, still, or slow water such as oxbow lakes, flooded savanna, and blackwater tributaries over fast-flowing rivers, since its bulky body is poorly suited to strong currents.
Individuals often lie submerged with only their eyes and nostrils, positioned high on the skull, breaking the surface, allowing them to ambush prey along the waterline while remaining almost invisible. During the dry season in seasonally flooded regions like the Venezuelan Llanos, anacondas may aggregate in shrinking pools, sometimes aestivating in mud when water disappears entirely.
Anatomy and senses
The green anaconda is the heaviest snake in the world and among the longest, with well-documented adult females reaching 5 to 6 meters and exceptionally weighing more than 90 kilograms, though claims of individuals beyond 9 meters remain unverified by scientific measurement. Females are substantially larger than males, a degree of sexual size dimorphism unusual among snakes and thought to relate to the physical demands of producing large litters of live young.
Its eyes and nostrils sit atop the head, an adaptation for surface-level ambush, and its skin is olive green patterned with large, oval black blotches that provide effective camouflage against sunlit water dappled with shadow. Anacondas lack heat-sensing pits, unlike boas and pit vipers, and instead rely heavily on vision at the water's surface and a highly sensitive forked tongue paired with the vomeronasal organ to track prey and detect mates through waterborne and airborne chemical cues.
Hunting and diet
Green anacondas are ambush predators that hunt primarily from the water, seizing prey such as capybara, caiman, deer, fish, turtles, and birds that approach to drink or that swim within range, gripping with recurved teeth before rapidly throwing coils around the animal. Death results from constriction, and contrary to older folklore about crushing bones, research on boid constriction shows death is caused chiefly by circulatory arrest, as tightening coils stop blood flow and the heart quickly fails rather than the animal being physically crushed.
Large prey such as adult caiman are swallowed whole over a period that can take hours, aided by the snake's highly flexible jaw ligaments and the ability to disarticulate its lower jaw halves. After a substantial meal an anaconda may not need to feed again for weeks or months, spending the intervening time largely motionless while digestion proceeds, a metabolic strategy that suits its energy-conserving ambush lifestyle.
Venom or constriction
The species is entirely nonvenomous, killing exclusively through constriction, and poses no toxinological risk to humans, its danger instead coming from its raw size and strength in rare cases of defensive or predatory encounters. Studies using instrumented mock prey have shown anacondas and other large constrictors can exert pressures far exceeding what is needed to stop a prey animal's heartbeat, and they adjust constriction force in response to the prey's heartbeat, loosening only once cardiac activity ceases.
This heartbeat-sensitive constriction, first documented experimentally in boas and pythons, indicates a level of physiological feedback in hunting behavior that is more sophisticated than simple reflexive squeezing, letting the snake conserve energy by not over-constricting once the prey is safely subdued.
Reproduction and life cycle
Green anacondas are ovoviviparous, and mating occurs in an unusual, well-documented phenomenon known as a breeding ball, in which multiple males, sometimes a dozen or more, coil around a single larger female for days to weeks in shallow water, competing to mate with her. Females can store sperm and may reproduce without a male being present through facultative parthenogenesis, a capability documented in captive anacondas and increasingly recognized across snake lineages.
Gestation lasts roughly six to seven months, and litters can be extraordinarily large for a snake, with 20 to 40 young reported and litters exceeding 80 recorded in exceptional cases; neonates measure around 70 to 80 centimeters at birth and are independent immediately. Females often lose a significant portion of their body mass during gestation because they do not feed, and some evidence suggests cannibalism of smaller males by females occurs occasionally after mating within breeding balls.
People, myth and history
The green anaconda is central to the cosmology of numerous Amazonian and Orinoco Indigenous peoples, who describe a giant serpent spirit, called the boiuna or cobra grande in Brazilian Amazon folklore and linked to underworld and creation myths among groups such as the Tukano, for whom an ancestral anaconda canoe carries the first humans up the Rio Negro. The Yacumama, meaning mother of water in Quechua-influenced legend, is another giant serpent said to inhabit deep river pools and protect or threaten those who disturb them.
European explorers' exaggerated reports of monstrous serpents, dating back to colonial-era chronicles, fueled centuries of popular exaggeration about anaconda size that persists in modern media and film, even though verified scientific records fall well short of the more sensational claims. The species remains one of the most recognizable and mythologized animals of South America, an emblem of the Amazon's untamed reputation.
Conservation and the future
The IUCN has not comprehensively assessed Eunectes murinus range-wide, but it is considered widespread and locally common, though hunting for skins, habitat loss from wetland drainage and deforestation, and persecution due to fear or livestock conflict have reduced numbers in some accessible areas. It is listed under CITES Appendix II, regulating international trade in skins and live specimens taken for the exotic leather and pet industries.
As a top aquatic predator and ecosystem indicator, the anaconda's health is closely tied to the condition of Amazonian and Orinoco wetlands, and ongoing wetland conversion for cattle ranching and agriculture in the Llanos and southern Amazon represents the most significant long-term threat to regional populations.
