Etymology

Lachesis is the Greek Fate who measures the thread of life; muta means "mute", because it vibrates its tail but has no rattle. In Latin America it is the surucucú or mapanare.

History

Rare, nocturnal, and confined to undisturbed forest, it is one of the few pit vipers of the Americas that lays eggs, and the female guards the clutch.

Name and naming

The bushmaster, Lachesis muta, takes its genus name from Lachesis, one of the three Fates of Greek mythology, the one who measures the thread of life, a fittingly ominous name for the longest venomous snake in the Americas.
