Etymology
"Everglades" joins the English "ever" (endless) with "glade", an open grassy clearing β a name that first appears on 1820s maps as "Ever Glades". The Seminole call the wetland Pa-hay-okee, "grassy water".
History
The Everglades formed roughly 5,000 years ago as rainfall pooled over a limestone shelf and drained slowly toward Florida Bay. Drainage canals dug from 1905 onward cut the wetland to about half its historic size, and the 2000 Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan is now the largest ecological restoration project ever attempted.
Geography and formation
The Everglades is not a swamp in the strict sense but a shallow, slow-moving sheet of water flowing almost imperceptibly southward from Lake Okeechobee toward Florida Bay, a movement historians call the 'river of grass' after Marjory Stoneman Douglas's 1947 book of that name. The system formed over roughly five thousand years as sea levels stabilized after the last glacial period, allowing peat and marl soils to build up over a limestone bedrock riddled with solution holes and shallow depressions. Water depth rarely exceeds a meter even at the height of the wet season, and the entire historic system once spanned some eleven thousand square kilometers before drainage and agriculture shrank it by roughly half.
Within this larger mosaic sit true swamp forests, dominated by bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) and pond apple, where standing water persists most of the year and buttressed trunks rise from black, tannin-stained water. Sawgrass marsh, tree islands called hammocks, mangrove estuaries, and pine rockland occur as a patchwork governed by tiny elevation differences of only a few centimeters, each supporting a distinct plant and animal community. This fine-grained variation in hydrology, more than anything else, is what makes the Everglades one of the most biologically diverse landscapes in North America.
Climate and seasons
South Florida has a subtropical climate with two sharply defined seasons: a hot, humid wet season from May to October that delivers roughly 90 percent of the region's annual rainfall of about 1,300 millimeters, and a cooler dry season from November to April when marshes shrink to isolated gator holes and sloughs. This seasonal pulse of flooding and drying is the single most important ecological driver in the system, concentrating fish and invertebrates into shrinking pools during the dry months and creating a predictable bonanza for wading birds, alligators, and snakes.
Summer afternoons regularly bring towering thunderstorms and are among the most lightning-prone conditions in the United States, while the dry season can bring wildfires that sweep through sawgrass and pineland, a natural and even necessary process for maintaining the open marsh. Hurricanes are a recurring and formative disturbance; storms such as Andrew in 1992 and Irma in 2017 have flattened mangrove forests and reshaped waterways, resetting succession across large areas.
Plants of the marsh and forest
Sawgrass (Cladium jamaicense), actually a sedge with saw-toothed leaf margins capable of cutting skin, forms vast monotypic stands across the shallowest marl prairies and gives the Everglades its most iconic look. In slightly deeper water, spikerush and white water lily dominate, while tree islands rise as dense hammocks of gumbo-limbo, live oak, and strangler fig on slightly elevated peat. Bald cypress domes mark the deepest, longest-flooded depressions, their knobby knees projecting above the waterline.
Along the coast the system grades into one of the largest contiguous mangrove forests in the Western Hemisphere, with red, black, and white mangrove trapping sediment and buffering the interior marsh from storm surge and salt intrusion. Periphyton, a slimy calcareous algal mat that carpets the marsh bottom, is easy to overlook but forms the base of the aquatic food web and helps regulate water chemistry.
Predators, prey and the food web
The dry-season concentration of fish into shrinking pools supports staggering numbers of wading birds, including wood storks, roseate spoonbills, and several heron and egret species, whose historic nesting colonies once numbered in the hundreds of thousands. The American alligator is the system's keystone engineer, excavating 'gator holes' that hold water through the driest months and become refuges for fish, turtles, and invertebrates that later reseed the marsh when rains return.
Snakes occupy nearly every niche in this web: the cottonmouth patrols the water's edge for fish and frogs, indigo snakes and racers hunt on drier hammocks, and the introduced Burmese python has become an apex predator capable of taking deer and even alligators. Bobcats, river otters, and the elusive Florida panther round out the mammal predators, while apple snails support the specialized diet of the limpkin and the snail kite, a raptor found nowhere else in the United States outside this region.
Human history
The Everglades has been home to people for at least two thousand years, most notably the Calusa near the coast and the ancestors of today's Seminole and Miccosukee people, who retreated into the marsh's interior tree islands during the Seminole Wars of the nineteenth century and developed a way of life built around dugout canoes, chickee shelters, and intimate knowledge of the water's rhythms. Early twentieth-century developers dismissed the region as worthless swamp and pushed aggressive drainage schemes, canals, and levees to convert marsh to farmland, a campaign accelerated after the disastrous 1928 Okeechobee hurricane killed an estimated 2,500 people and prompted construction of the Herbert Hoover Dike.
By mid-century the Army Corps of Engineers had built over 2,300 kilometers of canals and levees under the Central and Southern Florida Project, cutting the historic Everglades by roughly half and diverting its water to farms and coastal cities. Everglades National Park, established in 1947, protected only the southern remnant, while sugarcane and vegetable agriculture expanded across the drained northern marsh, setting the stage for the restoration battles of today.
Threats and restoration
Nutrient runoff, chiefly phosphorus from agriculture north of the park, has driven cattail into former sawgrass marsh and disrupted the low-nutrient periphyton communities that anchor the food web. Invasive species compound the damage: Burmese pythons have decimated populations of raccoons, opossums, and rabbits across the park since the 1990s, while Old World climbing fern and melaleuca trees crowd out native vegetation across thousands of hectares.
The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, authorized by Congress in 2000 with an estimated cost exceeding 23 billion dollars, is the largest ecosystem restoration project in world history, aiming to remove barriers to natural water flow, build reservoirs and treatment marshes to clean agricultural runoff, and re-establish something closer to the historic sheet flow. Sea-level rise adds urgency, since even a small rise threatens to push saltwater into freshwater marshes that sit barely above current sea level.
What it means for a snake living here
For a snake, the Everglades offers an unusual bargain: extraordinary prey abundance in a landscape that alternates between flood and drought, so that success depends on tracking water rather than defending a fixed territory. Species that can swim well, tolerate brackish water, and shift diet with the seasons, from fish and frogs in the wet months to small mammals when pools dry down, thrive here, while habitat specialists tied to a single vegetation type struggle as canals and levees fragment the old flow patterns.
The warm, nearly frost-free climate also means an unusually long active season, letting resident snakes forage and reproduce across most of the year rather than enduring a long winter dormancy, and it has made the region tragically hospitable to escaped or released tropical species that would perish farther north.
