Etymology

"Python" is the monstrous serpent of Delphi slain by Apollo in Greek myth. bivittatus means "two-banded", for the stripes on its head.

History

Native to Southeast Asia, Burmese pythons became established in South Florida after decades of pet escapes and releases, with a population confirmed breeding by 2000. Surveys since have recorded steep declines in Everglades raccoons, opossums, and rabbits.

Name and naming

The Burmese python, Python bivittatus, was long classified as a subspecies of the Indian python before genetic and morphological studies elevated it to full species status in 2009. The species name bivittatus means 'two-striped,' referring to the dark stripe that runs from the snout through each eye toward the jaw, a distinctive facial marking visible even in juveniles. It is one of the largest snake species on Earth by both length and mass, rivaled in size only by the reticulated python and green anaconda.

In its native range across South and Southeast Asia it is simply called the Burmese or Indian python, but in the United States it has become primarily known through its status as one of the most consequential invasive species in the Everglades, a story that has overshadowed public awareness of its native ecology and conservation status.

Where it lives

Native populations occur across a broad swath of South and Southeast Asia, including eastern India, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, southern China, and parts of Indonesia, where the species favors grasslands, marshes, river valleys, and forest edges near permanent water. It is strongly associated with wetlands and is a capable swimmer, often found basking along riverbanks or hidden in dense waterside vegetation.

Since the 1990s an established, breeding invasive population has occupied Everglades National Park and surrounding South Florida wetlands, believed to have originated from escaped or intentionally released pets, an event possibly accelerated by animals scattered during Hurricane Andrew in 1992. This population has since expanded across thousands of square kilometers of South Florida, exploiting habitat remarkably similar to its native range.

Anatomy and senses

Burmese pythons are massive, heavy-bodied snakes that commonly reach 3 to 5 meters in length, with the largest confirmed wild specimens captured in Florida exceeding 5.5 meters and weighing close to 90 kilograms. Their base coloration is tan to olive brown overlaid with large, dark brown blotches outlined in black, a pattern that provides remarkably effective camouflage among leaf litter and shadowed vegetation despite the snake's enormous size.

They possess heat-sensing pits along both the upper and lower lips, an unusually extensive array compared to many other pythons, granting acute sensitivity to infrared cues from warm-bodied prey even in total darkness or dense cover. Their skulls house recurved, backward-angled teeth suited for gripping struggling prey, and like all pythons they retain small vestigial pelvic spurs, remnants of ancestral hind limbs, near the base of the tail.

Hunting and diet

As ambush predators, Burmese pythons rely on stillness and camouflage, often lying coiled near game trails or burrow entrances for extended periods before striking prey with a rapid lunge and immediately throwing constricting coils around the body. In their native range, diet includes birds, rodents, and small to medium mammals, but in the Everglades their diet has proven remarkably broad and consequential, including white-tailed deer, raccoons, opossums, bobcats, wading birds, and even American alligators.

Studies conducted since the early 2000s documenting sharp declines in mammal sightings along Everglades roadways, including declines exceeding 90 percent for raccoons and opossums in some survey areas, have directly implicated python predation as the cause, marking one of the most dramatic documented impacts of a single invasive predator species on a native mammal community in recorded history.

Venom or constriction

Burmese pythons are entirely non-venomous and kill exclusively by constriction, wrapping muscular coils around prey and tightening with each breath the animal exhales until circulation stops and the prey loses consciousness within moments, a mechanism now understood to work primarily by cutting off blood flow rather than by crushing or outright suffocation. Given the python's great size, it can subdue prey considerably larger than itself relative to body mass, including full-grown deer.

Because of their size and strength, large captive Burmese pythons have been responsible for a small number of well-documented human fatalities worldwide, almost always involving improperly secured enclosures or unsupervised interaction, which has led some jurisdictions, including several U.S. states, to restrict or ban private ownership of the species.

Reproduction and life cycle

Unlike boas, Burmese pythons are oviparous, with females laying clutches that can range from 12 to over 100 eggs depending on body size, an unusually large reproductive capacity that has aided the species' invasive spread in Florida. Females coil tightly around their eggs and can generate metabolic heat through rhythmic muscular contractions, a behavior called facultative endothermy that helps maintain optimal incubation temperature during the roughly two- to three-month incubation period.

Hatchlings measure around 50 to 60 centimeters and receive no further parental care after hatching, though they grow extremely quickly on a rich diet, with some individuals reaching sexual maturity in as little as two to three years, a rapid life history that has proven especially problematic in the resource-rich Everglades.

People, myth and history

In parts of its native range the Burmese python has traditionally been hunted for its skin, used in the leather trade, and for meat, and it has also long been kept and revered in some Southeast Asian communities, appearing in regional folklore as a symbol of both danger and fertility. Its docile temperament as a captive-bred animal made it enormously popular in the American pet trade from the 1970s onward, often marketed to owners unprepared for an animal that can eventually exceed 4 meters in length.

The establishment of a breeding population in the Everglades, first confirmed in the 1990s and formally acknowledged as established by the early 2000s, has transformed the species into a case study cited internationally in discussions of invasive species policy, prompting the United States to list it as an injurious species under the Lacey Act in 2012, restricting interstate transport and import.

Conservation and the future

In its native Asian range, the Burmese python is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to habitat loss, hunting for the skin trade, and collection for the pet trade, presenting the unusual situation of a species simultaneously threatened in its homeland and ecologically destructive as an invasive elsewhere. Wetland drainage, agricultural conversion, and unregulated harvest have reduced native populations across parts of its range in Southeast Asia.

In Florida, management has shifted from eradication, now considered essentially impossible given the population's size and the difficulty of finding cryptic snakes in dense wetland habitat, toward suppression through professional and public hunting programs, radio-tracking 'scout' males to locate breeding females, and detector-dog teams, efforts aimed at protecting remaining native mammal and bird populations rather than eliminating the python entirely.
