Etymology
arietans is Latin for "striking like a ram". The English name comes from the loud hiss it puffs out when alarmed.
History
Widespread across Africa outside rainforest and desert, it causes more snakebite injuries than any other African species β not because it is aggressive, but because it relies on camouflage and is stepped on.
Name and naming
The puff adder, Bitis arietans, takes its common name from its dramatic threat display: when disturbed, it inflates its body with air and releases it in a loud, hissing puff intended to startle an intruder before any strike is needed. The genus name Bitis is an old Latin-derived name applied by early taxonomists to African vipers, while the species epithet arietans derives from the Latin for butting or ramming, an allusion either to the animal's stout, ram-like head shape or to its forceful striking action.
It was formally described by the German naturalist Johann Gottlob Theaenus Merrem in 1820, based on specimens from southern Africa, and has since accumulated numerous regional common names across the many languages of its enormous range, including nagadder in Afrikaans.
Where it lives
Bitis arietans has the widest distribution of any African viper, occurring from Morocco and Arabia in the north through virtually all of sub-Saharan Africa to South Africa's Western Cape, and it also reaches into montane habitats above 2,000 metres in East Africa's highlands. It is remarkably habitat-flexible, occupying savanna, grassland, semi-desert scrub, agricultural margins and even the edges of forest, but it generally avoids true rainforest interior and the driest sand-sea deserts.
Within mountain highlands it favours open, rocky or grassy slopes with good sun exposure, often basking on paths, rock outcrops or short vegetation rather than deep cover, which brings it into frequent, sometimes dangerous, contact with people walking on foot.
Anatomy and senses
This is a heavy-bodied viper, typically 0.6 to 1 metre long though exceptional individuals exceed 1.2 metres, with a broad, flattened, triangular head clearly distinct from the neck and keeled scales that produce its characteristic rough, dry rasping sound when the body shifts. Colouration is cryptic: pale yellowish, tan or grey-brown ground colour overlaid with dark chevron-shaped crossbands that break up its outline against leaf litter and dead grass.
Puff adders rely on heat-sensing infrared pits are absent in true vipers of this genus, but they possess excellent chemoreception via a forked tongue and vomeronasal Jacobson's organ, along with sensitive vibration detection through the lower jaw and body, both crucial since the species is largely sedentary and ambushes prey rather than pursuing it visually across distance.
Hunting and diet
The puff adder is a classic sit-and-wait ambush predator, remaining motionless for hours or days in leaf litter or short grass, relying on camouflage until a rodent, bird, lizard, frog, or occasionally a smaller snake, wanders within striking range. Its strike is exceptionally fast, among the quickest documented in snakes, delivering venom through long, hinged fangs before releasing the prey to retreat rather than being held, minimizing risk of injury from struggling prey.
After a successful strike the adder uses scent trailing to relocate envenomated prey once it succumbs, then swallows it whole. Because ambush hunting expends little energy, puff adders can survive on infrequent large meals and may go weeks between feeding events, particularly during cooler months when metabolic demand drops.
Venom and its effects
Puff adder venom is predominantly cytotoxic and haemotoxic, containing metalloproteinases, phospholipases A2, and other enzymes that cause severe local tissue destruction, massive swelling, blistering and sometimes necrosis at the bite site, alongside systemic effects including coagulopathy, hypotension and, in serious cases, shock. Unlike neurotoxic elapid venoms, puff adder venom rarely causes paralysis, but the sheer venom yield, among the highest of any viper species at up to 750 milligrams in a single milking, makes envenomation potentially life-threatening and frequently disfiguring if untreated.
The puff adder is responsible for more snakebite fatalities in Africa than any other single species, a statistic driven less by unusual aggression than by its wide distribution, excellent camouflage, reluctance to flee when approached, and frequent proximity to footpaths and farmland where people encounter it unexpectedly, often by stepping on or near it.
Reproduction and life cycle
Puff adders are viviparous, retaining eggs internally and giving birth to live young after a gestation of roughly five to seven months. Litter sizes are notably large for a snake, commonly 20 to 40 offspring and occasionally exceeding 80, each neonate measuring around 12 to 25 centimetres and fully independent and venomous from birth.
Females do not appear to invest in prolonged parental care, and juvenile mortality is high from predation by birds of prey, mongooses and other snakes, but the sheer reproductive output helps sustain populations despite this attrition. Growth is relatively slow and sexual maturity is reached at around two to three years of age.
People, myth and history
Across much of rural Africa the puff adder holds an outsized place in local knowledge and folklore precisely because it causes more serious bites than any other snake on the continent, and warnings about it feature prominently in agricultural and pastoral safety traditions. Its habit of lying still rather than fleeing, an effective camouflage strategy against non-human predators, is frequently cited as the reason so many bites occur when people step directly on a resting individual.
Historically, puff adder venom's tissue-destructive effects were documented by early colonial-era physicians and later became an important research subject for understanding cytotoxic snake venoms broadly, contributing to the development of polyvalent antivenoms used across sub-Saharan Africa today.
Conservation and the future
The puff adder is assessed as being of Least Concern by the IUCN owing to its vast range and tolerance of disturbed habitats, and it remains common across most of its distribution, including agricultural landscapes where it continues to find rodent prey around grain stores and field margins. It faces localized declines from persecution, road mortality and habitat conversion in some regions, but no continent-wide population collapse has been documented.
Public health efforts increasingly focus not on reducing puff adder numbers but on reducing human harm, through footwear recommendations, snakebite awareness campaigns, and improved access to antivenom in rural clinics across its range, reflecting a broader shift toward coexistence-based conservation for medically significant species.
